Respiratory syncytial viruses

Respiratory syncytial viruses (HRSVA and HRSVB) are associated with lower respiratory tract infection in all age groups. Most infections occur during the winter season, lower respiratory tract infections with RSV is of particular importance in infants, the immunocompromised and the elderly as complications eg. bronchiolitis and pneumonia may develop. RSV is transmitted through droplet infection or from direct and indirect contact with nasal or oral secretions.
