About Mycoplasma Genitalium

Mycoplasma genitalium is a small bacterium that infects the urinary and genital tracts. It is sexually transmitted and, after chlamydia, is a main cause of non-gonococcal urethritis. In women it is linked to cervicitis, pelvic inflammatory disease and endometritis, and it is a co-factor in HIV transmission.

It cannot be detected by regular culture, so molecular (PCR) testing is the practical way to find it.

What to Watch For

  • Often no symptoms
  • Vaginal itching
  • Burning or pain when urinating
  • Pain during sex
  • Urethral discharge (men)
  • Joint pain and swelling (men, less common)

How CARIGEN Tests

  • STI-11+ — panel of 11 STIs

*The STI-9 test was developed and its performance characteristics determined by Caribbean Genetics. It has not been cleared or approved by the US Food and Drug Administration or local regulations.
