About Adenovirus (Gastrointestinal)
Adenoviruses spread like the common cold — through coughs and sneezes, close contact, and touching contaminated surfaces. Some types, including the group F adenoviruses (types 40 and 41) that cause gastroenteritis, also spread through stool, for example during nappy changes.
Symptoms of intestinal infection appear 3–10 days after exposure. People with weak immune systems are at higher risk of severe illness.
Symptoms
- Diarrhoea and gastroenteritis
- Fever
- Common cold symptoms and sore throat
- Pink eye (conjunctivitis)
- Bronchitis or pneumonia
