Human metapneumoviruses (HMPVA and B) cause a wide range of respiratory diseases, ranging from mild upper respiratory tract infections to severe bronchiolitis and pneumonia. HMPV is considered ubiquitous worldwide. Although HMPV infections have been diagnosed in all age groups, the virus likely has its greatest effect in children. Transmission most likely occurs by contact with contaminated secretions or via droplet and aerosols. Hospital acquired infections with Human Metapneumovirus have also been reported.
