About Varicella-Zoster Virus
Varicella-zoster virus (VZV) causes chickenpox (varicella): malaise, fever and a widespread blistering rash, which in adults — particularly pregnant women — can lead to pneumonia.
After chickenpox clears, the virus stays dormant in nerve ganglia. In about 10–20% of people it reactivates later in life as herpes zoster (shingles).
Symptoms
- Malaise and fever
- Widespread blistering rash
- Pneumonia in some adults, particularly in pregnancy
- Shingles if the virus reactivates
